“The most important relationship in your life is the relationship you have with yourself,” Diane Von Furstenberg said recently in a TV interview. I’m not a big fan of quotes, slogans and one-sentence philosophies that tell me how to live my life. But ‘tis the season of New Year’s resolutions and I’ve decided that improving the relationship I have with myself would be the perfect one for me. It calls for no diets, no gym visits, and no early wake up calls. I might have just found the one resolution that I can keep past the first two weeks of January.
And what better way to improve a relationship than with a gift? Brilliant. I’m going to bribe myself into focusing on myself. I’m starting to love my new resolution.
Christmas is just a few days away, and I’m behind on my shopping, but I have already picked out the perfect present for myself. A post-holiday fitness vacation!
It occurs to me, of course, that it will be too indulgent to travel right after I return home from the holidays. But I don’t really have a choice, do I? I’m following my resolution. I’m listening to my needs and prioritizing my health, both physical and emotional. In fact, I’ve decided, it will be crazy not to take a break after weeks of over eating, over socializing and over exposure to family.
But this will be more than just a break.
I will begin the New Year with a trip to St. Thomas where I’ll join Jennie Green’s fitness group. I’ll exercise on the beach with the soundtrack of crashing waves and swim in the warm Caribbean. But that’s not all. I will also purchase one of the gorgeous Tryad swimsuits that Jennie designs and sews herself.
I can barely wait.
